Homily for the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
(June 3, 2007)

Jesus said: I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. The Spirit of truth will guide you to the truth. In Jesus, is the fullness of truth, but can the church ever say, we have nothing else to learn from the Holy Spirit?

·        If that were true, after Pentecost the church would have nothing more to learn

·        After the Bible was completed, why would we have needed the Council of Nicea, or  Trent, or Vatican II?

·        If the church already had captured all the truth, why would John Paul or Benedict write letters and books? They would merely tell us to read what was written by other popes  years ago.

I)It seems to me that  humans can never exhaust the truth about God or even about the universe.
  A)    Since God is infinite there is always more for the Holy Spirit to reveal to us
The Spirit continues an ongoing unveiling of the truth and insights into the truth, which we cannot grasp all at one time.  Jesus said: I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.   While defined dogmas of faith cannot be changed, our understanding of mysteries like the Trinity will never fully grasp that mystery.

   B) Even the scientific truths of the physical universe continue to be beyond human grasp.   We don’t fully understand how our own bodies work, let alone being able to grasp all the workings of our planet. And we have only a tiny fraction of  knowledge about what is really going in 100 billion other galaxies.

II} Since there is always more truth to be unveiled by the Spirit of God, I must not limit myself to what I already comprehend. While we are meant to enjoy today, we are inexorably being drawn toward tomorrow. There is always more to learn.
Story: The psychiatrist, Scott Peck, in writing The Road Less Traveled was drawn to become a Christian, as he came to realize that life does not make sense if what you see is all that you get. The meaning of our lives is bigger than the sum of all our past experiences.
Is God calling you forward to More than you can ever grasp?  Is the ultimate meaning of your lives still ahead of you?  Even when you are enjoying life, do you have a deep inkling that this life is not all that there is?

Legend: There is a legend that the Sea wanted to have a human child of her own. So when a group of people in small canoes were going between two islands, she whipped up a storm, causing great waves which capsized their canoes. The passengers fell into the water and a young boy almost drowned, but the humans got him to dry land.  When the Land taunted the Sea because she lost the boy she was trying to claim, the Sea responded: I’m not worried because I was able to toss a wavelet into the little one’s heart. He will come back to me, because he now has the sea in his soul.

Do you feel something in you – a spirit – drawing you forward? Drawing you toward God? That Spirit is drawing you toward your home in heaven. The fullness of truth and love surpasses anything we have ever experienced so far on this earth.

Story: Wanting to go home reminds me of a man who was stranded on an island. He tried many ways to try to get home – at first by swimming, but the tide brought him back. Then he built a large raft with lots of provisions, but the current brought him back to the island. He began to think he would never get home.
But then a voice – can we say a spirit – called him to go to the top of a high cliff. He argued with the spirit: How will that help me get home? You have to jump off the cliff. But if the fall does not kill me, the waves will dash me on the rocks. Finally he came to believe the voice deep within. When he trusted the Spirit enough to jump, he did not die. But rather he found a current that existed no where else around the island and the current took him home.
