Homily for the Seventh Sunday In Ordinary Time
(Feb 18, 2007)
After a bitter divorce,
someone might advise the offended party
Do unto the other one
what he or she has done onto you
Those who advocate a
preemptive War, advise you to attack your enemy first
They Say: Do
it unto to others before they can do it unto you.
What does Jesus have to say
about our relationship with someone we find hard to love?
What does Jesus say about those who have really been nasty to us?
Love your enemies!
Stop judging and you will not be judged
What about our normal
everyday relationships with friends, families and co-workers with th3e
normal misunderstandings or times of being shortchanged in some small
way.
How does Jesus say we should treat those who may have disappointed us?
Do
unto others as you want them to do unto you.
Think
about the way you want your wife to treat you, and treat her that way

To sum up, I want to go
back to the gospel one more time to examine the secret to all human
relationships. This applies not only to marriage, but to parish retreat
teams, office co-workers, other students in the classroom or on the
basketball floor.
What does Jesus say?
Forgive and you will be forgiven
This is repeated in the Our Father when we pray –
Forgive
us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Do
unto others as you would have them do unto you.
If you want
other people to forgive you, then
you must be willing to forgive other people,
as Christ has forgiven you.
If
you want to receive lots of love, then give lots of
love
Do unto others the way you want them to do unto you.
