Homily for the Fourth Sunday In Ordinary Time
(Jan 28, 2007)

Father John Powell told the story of a son who was killed in an accident. His father wrote this note and put it under his son’s body in the casket:

I never told you how much I loved you. I never told you how much of a large part of my heart you occupied..  But now you are dead.. So I am writing this note to you.  I  want you to know of my love for you, and my sorrow that I never told you of that love.

I)     God wants to tell all of his children: I love you.

A-    God did this by giving us this beautiful world.

B-
God does this by sending prophets like Jeremiah who hands on God’s message to each of us:
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Before you were born I dedicated you…
They will fight against you, but not prevail over you, for I am with you.

C-
Then in the fullness of time God decided to send the message in the most powerful way possible. He sent his only begotten Son, not just to say: I love you, but Jesus showed God’s love for us by giving his life for us; giving us his body and blood as the greatest sign of that Love.

D- Paul tells us that the greatest of all the gifts God has given to us is Love or Charity.

II) Mother Teresa always made sure that those who came to serve the poor would know why they were doing the various ministries.  She knew that without real love for Christ, their motivation would fall short. She called the sisters who gathered with her Missionaries of Charity.

·        She said that each Missionary of Charity must see herself as a co-worker with Christ.

·        Let Christ radiate and live his life in you and through you as you go into the slums

·        Let the poor, seeing you, be drawn to Christ, so they will invite Christ into their homes & their lives

·        Let the sick and suffering find in you a real angel of comfort and charity

·        Let the little ones of the street cling to you, because you remind them of Christ, the friend of the little ones.

III) Some of the members of the church at Corinth were very proud of their great spiritual gifts.
Paul came to the conclusion that not only is love the greatest of all the gifts, but that without Charity all the other gifts and talents will be fruitless.
   * Great preaching or healing will not form Christians, if they do not experience true charity.
Without love the Body of Christ will starve.
   * No matter how you pay to heat your house, without love your family will grow cold.

* Even if you write great love poems for your girl friend, eventually she will turn away if she discovers that you don’t really love her.

Conclusion: Love is both the only thing that you can take with you to Heaven, and Love is what makes the world go round.  On the one hand you cant just say you love someone, you must show it. On the other hand, if you have a member of your family or a friend whom you have never told how much you love them, please tell them!
