Homily for the Third Sunday In Ordinary Time
(Jan 21, 2007)
Homily with Phil Avina Witness 5:30, 8 & 10
EJS:
Paul teaches us that
the Body of Christ is one Body with many parts
* This reminds us during this week of prayer for Christian Unity that
all Christians are supposed to be united in one Body, because Christ
does not have many bodies.
·
It also reminds each of us as individuals that we are not
meant to operate totally on our own. The foot needs the hand; the ear
needs the eye. As a member
of the Body of Christ, I need the other members of the Church.
Paul says it would be ridiculous to think of the whole body being
an eye or a foot. One person cannot be a Body of Christ. There is no
such thing as a solitary Christian. We need each other.
Phil:
In a Small Group
Take
advantage of people who come with different gifts
Add to the Body
Each
comes with different occupation / experiences to a Small Group
Your
whole gift, so you bring your whole life experience
It is not just about your
triumphs, but also your failures, not just your virtues, but also your
sins
One day a Minister stopped to watch a kid who kept throwing a
football up into the air and catching it himself. Each time he caught
it, he spiked it like he had made a touchdown.
When the
Minister thought about how many people want to celebrate victory even
though they are not part of a team, it reminded him that many Christians
want to celebrate the Victory of Christ, without being part of the Body
of Christ.
I would say that one who wants to play
their own Christian game, by their own rules, really is not in the game.
They are looking to have a victory feeling without being willing
to pass on their Christianity to connect with a receiver; or they are
not willing to become a receiver of what other members and leaders of
the church are passing on to them.
They
have their own ball, standing out in the yard, making up their own rules
and only catching what they themselves throw.
They are missing out completely on what it means to be a member
of Christ’s Team. What it means to be a member of the Body of Christ.
